The Reality
I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate everyone in the healthcare system, especially in 2020.
I’ve been able to appreciate and gain a sense of gratitude both as a patient and a healthcare worker / director of a allied health team this year and it’s been tough!
As a patient:
My hospital stay this year was fast paced; I went straight in, they identified the breaks, I signed forms, I mentally and physically prepped myself for surgery, I had post op recovery, told of my limitations during recovery and then I was discharged, all within 24 hours. I was told to manage my health and complete post op appointments for the following 6 weeks.
As I finished up all my post-op surgery check up’s with the hospital and the screws were removed from my jaw (yes, it’s as horrible as it sounds!), the hospital staff sent me on my way and told me that I no longer needed to see them anymore.
I did however need to manage the physical muscular injury to my neck and shoulders, my jaw pain and my mental health. For someone who works in the medical health industry, I still find it hard and confronting to experience. I did not know what to expect next, what my long term effects are of my injuries but also what the short term implications could be as well.
I am thankful I have some background knowledge of the body and understand the physiological functions to know that there will be and can be some long term side affects of this type of injury. But not everyone does, what happens then and how can we better inform our clients to ensure their long term wellbeing, physical and mental health?
This is where my allied health team came into play. I built a wonderful team of people around me to help recover fully and manage the ongoing and long term effects of this accident. I have multiple key players who will be working their magic for the next few years. For that I am very thankful.
As a health professional:
2020 has been a year like no other. As an OT and as a director of an OT business / allied health team we have had to navigate the new normal in many more ways than one!
My business thankfully hasn’t been too impacted by COVID, we continue to grow and change. We continue to be there for our families - often answering questions as we figure it out along the way!
It’s been wonderful to see our communities band together and offer support not only to other families but to our team as well. They have been patient as we all navigate the unknown.
I always remind our families that as health professionals we are ALWAYS all here for you, your health and well being is of utmost importance!
As both a patient and a health care worker:
The most important thing I have learnt growing up and have taken it with me throughout the years personally and in my professional life is community. Build a community around you, that is supportive and can help. Always ask questions and seek help, there’s a wonderful team of people out there ready to support you! I’m so thankful that I have mine both personally and professionally!
So from my community to yours: look after yourself, take each day as it comes, don’t push your limits, rest and be kind to yourself. Your health and well-being matters.
A big thank you to all the health professionals in our local communities, you’re doing an amazing job in a tough time!
